Huggable Books

These are books that we have read recently and loved. Some of them are brand new. Others might have been around for a while but we just got to them. Still others might be coming soon. If they are not available yet we will mention when they are being released in the great wide world. Either way these are the books we found it hard to let go.

The Publisher says: Newbery Medalist Gaiman teams with artist Young for a hilarious story of time travel. While picking up milk for his children's cereal, a father is abducted by aliens and finds himself on a wild adventure through time and space. Illustrations.

Patty says: I knew this book is targeted to 8-12 year olds when I picked it up. I am a big believer that adults can and should read everything that catches their eye. There is a Stregasaurus flying a hot air balloon on the cover. How could I not read it? It is about this father who goes out to buy milk for his kids (because they have nothing to eat their cereal with) and runs into some interesting obsticles along the way. It is a really wonderful story with fantastic illustrations and I believe every kid (no matter what age) should read this book to their father (or vice versa).

Wayne and Lori Earl are the parents of the late Esther Earl and founders of the non-profit organization This Star Won't Go Out (tswgo.org), whose mission it is to financially assist families struggling through the journey of a child living with cancer. Together Wayne and Lori have created a financial and emotional support system for more than 50 families struggling with childhood cancer, giving out nearly $100,000, from purchases of TSWGO bracelets, through donations given individually, at LeakyCon, and Project for Awesome; and by fabulous fundraisers planned and implemented by individuals and groups. TSWGO also funds occasional projects that fit their mission statement, such as sponsoring events for children with cancer, giving financial support to pediatric cancer research, and other related projects.

From the celebrated author of "The Secret Life of Bees," a magnificent novel about two unforgettable American women

Writing at the height of her narrative and imaginative gifts, Sue Monk Kidd presents a masterpiece of hope, daring, the quest for freedom, and the desire to have a voice in the world--and it is now the newest Oprah's Book Club 2.0 selection. Hetty "Handful" Grimke, an urban slave in early nineteenth century Charleston, yearns for life beyond the suffocating walls that enclose her within the wealthy Grimke household. The Grimke's daughter, Sarah, has known from an early age she is meant to do something large in the world, but she is hemmed in by the limits imposed on women.
Kidd's sweeping novel is set in motion on Sarah's eleventh birthday, when she is given ownership of ten year old Handful, who is to be her handmaid. We follow their remarkable journeys over the next thirty five years, as both strive for a life of their own, dramatically shaping each other's destinies and forming a complex relationship marked by guilt, defiance, estrangement and the uneasy ways of love.
As the stories build to a riveting climax, Handful will endure loss and sorrow, finding courage and a sense of self in the process. Sarah will experience crushed hopes, betrayal, unrequited love, and ostracism before leaving Charleston to find her place alongside her fearless younger sister, Angelina, as one of the early pioneers in the abolition and women's rights movements.
Inspired by the historical figure of Sarah Grimke, Kidd goes beyond the record to flesh out the rich interior lives of all of her characters, both real and invented, including Handful's cunning mother, Charlotte, who courts danger in her search for something better.
This exquisitely written novel is a triumph of storytelling that looks with unswerving eyes at a devastating wound in American history, through women whose struggles for liberation, empowerment, and expression will leave no reader unmoved.

A young girl's disappearance rocks a community and a family in this stirring examination of grief, faith, justice, and the atrocities of war from Joyce Carol Oates, "one of the great artistic forces of our time" (The Nation)

Zeno Mayfield's daughter has disappeared into the night, gone missing in the wilds of the Adirondacks. But when the community of Carthage joins a father's frantic search for the girl, they discover the unlikeliest of suspects--a decorated Iraq War veteran with close ties to the Mayfield family. As grisly evidence mounts against the troubled war hero, the family must wrestle with the possibility of having lost a daughter forever.

Carthage plunges us deep into the psyche of a wounded young corporal haunted by unspeakable acts of wartime aggression, while unraveling the story of a disaffected young girl whose exile from her family may have come long before her disappearance.

Dark and riveting, Carthage is a powerful addition to the Joyce Carol Oates canon, one that explores the human capacity for violence, love, and forgiveness, and asks if it's ever truly possible to come home again.

There's no room for softness, no room for emotion, no room for mistakes. A Legion General, she is the right hand of the young Prince of Neospes, a parallel universe to Earth. In Neospes, she has everything: rank, responsibility and respect. But when Prince Cale sends her away to find his long-lost brother, Caden, who has been spirited back to modern day Earth, Riven finds herself in uncharted territory.
Thrown out of her comfort zone but with the mindset of a soldier, Riven has to learn how to be a girl in a realm that is the opposite of what she knows. Riven isn't prepared for the beauty of a world that is unlike her own in so many ways. Nor is she prepared to feel something more than indifference for the very target she seeks. Caden is nothing like Cale, but he makes something in her come alive, igniting a spark deep down that goes against every cell in her body. For the first time in her life, Riven isn't sure about her purpose, about her calling. Torn between duty and desire, she must decide whether Caden is simply a target or whether he is something more.
Faced with hideous reanimated Vector soldiers from her own world with agendas of their own, as well as an unexpected reunion with a sister who despises her, it is a race against time to bring Caden back to Neospes. But things aren't always as they seem, and Riven will have to search for truth. Family betrayals and royal coups are only the tip of the iceberg. Will Riven be able to find the strength to defy her very nature? Or will she become the monstrous soldier she was designed to be?

The English translation of Pancol's runaway French bestseller is a satisfying Cinderella story. Middle-aged Josephine has hit bottom: she's thrown out her husband for cheating with a younger woman and now must support their daughters on a researcher's salary while the rest of her wealthy family take jabs at her choices. Her teenage daughter, Hortense, emerges as a confident and driven sexual powerhouse who treats her dowdy mother with angry contempt. But Josephine's socialite sister, Iris, has connections in the publishing world and proposes a bargain: Josephine will use her knowledge of the 12th century to write a novel; the money will go to her and the credit to Iris. Pancol is at her most interesting when she writes about Josephine's financial worries and the anxiety that hangs over the family; the giddy relief when money comes her way is delicious. Other elements are more formulaic the highlighted hair, the gorgeous new lover, the best friend with secret reserves of wealth and a great deal of influence. The too-literal translation often doesn't make sense of French idioms (one likens Josephine's stepfather to an "old toad on a matchbox"). But nevermind the toads; the stars are aligned in Josephine's favor, and readers will stay with her until the glass slipper is firmly back on her foot. (Jan.)
